Comprehension, or understanding, is the major objective of all reading instruction, and the structure of Read Reason Write: New York reflects that goal. Each workbook focuses on a kid-friendly theme. The passages in the books have increasing readability levels, starting slightly below and building to a high on-grade level. Each lesson follows a standard format:
a fiction or nonfiction passage with accompanying graphics to establish context
a series of multiple-choice questions to assess literal, inferential, and critical thinking skills
a graphic organizer-based writing question to help students organize their thoughts
a text-related writing assignment to reinforce the reading passage
Each book contains two review lessons that require students to think about several selections at one time-synthesize, generalize, and conceptualize.
Multiple theme books for each grade level.
Comprehensive teacher's guides include correlations to the Performance Indicators and Literacy Competencies of the NYS English Language Arts Core Curriculum, as well as additional information about the themes, key words that are essential for understanding the passage, and concrete suggestions for additional skills instruction and follow-up activities.
