Three is the magic number in this Big Ideas in Math series. Each grade-specific book provides practice for the three mathematical concepts and skills identified by the NCTM Curriculum Focal Points, along with the corresponding connections.
Student books approach content through the process strands to help students develop greater comprehension of the mathematics concepts, their interconnections, and the skills employed with them as opposed to rote learning. Process strands include:
representation
reasoning
connections
communication
problem solving

Introduction to the topic
Guided example: Prompting questions guide student's thinking in a step-by-step fashion to reinforce reasoning skills. The last question is open ended, asking the student to respond in his/her own words. It focuses on reasoning, thus addressing both communication and reasoning process strands.
Independent practice: Questions grow progressively more difficult as students work through this section. In grades in which mastery of computation is central, questions also include computation problems in a variety of formats, including problem solving.
End-of-unit reviews test mastery of the math skills and concepts.
