Three is the magic number in this new Big Ideas in Math series. Each grade-specific book provides practice for the three mathematical concepts and skills identified by focal points, along with the corresponding connections.
By approaching content through the process strands, students develop greater comprehension of the mathematics concepts, their interconnections, and the skills employed with them as opposed to rote learning. Process strands include:
representation
reasoning
connections
communication
problem solving
Lesson format (2 pages)
Identification of the focal point covered
Introduction to the topic
Guided example: Prompting questions guide student's thinking in a step-by-step fashion to reinforce reasoning skills. The last question is open ended, asking the student to respond in his/her own words. It focuses on reasoning, thus addressing both communication and reasoning process strands.
Independent practice: Questions grow progressively more difficult as students work through this section. In grades in which mastery of computation is central, questions also include computation problems in a variety of formats, including problem solving.
End-of-unit reviews test mastery of the math skills and concepts.
State-specific teacher's guides for Pennsylvania, Florida, and Tennessee are currently in development. If you are from one of these states and a teacher's guide is included in your order, you'll automatically receive your state guide if it is available.
