Building Basic Reading Skills

Building Basic Reading Skills promotes the real-world literacy skills today's students need. Teachers will appreciate the incremental development of essential reading skills in four strands:

Main Idea & Details

• Helps students distinguish main idea and details in sentences, summaries, titles, pictures, fiction, and poetry

Inference

• Students learn to draw inferences from text and pictures, predict outcomes, and draw conclusions

Sequence

• Students recognize story sequence using time and picture clues, construction of time lines, and more.

Cause & Effect

• Students develop an understanding of causal relationships through exercises in selecting causes, matching causes with effect, completing cause-effect statements, and analyzing multiple causes and effects.
• Graphic organizers, such as webs, time charts, Venn diagrams, cause-and-effect charts, and process diagrams help students penetrate text.
