With Finish Line Comprehension Skills, you can teach eight key reading skills one at a time. In six grade-appropriate levels, each series uses high-interest, real-world reading selections, including classic literature and poetry, and carefully designed exercises to help students develop higher-order reading strategies.
Eight skill-specific titles are available for grades 3-8:
Understanding Main Idea and Details
Identifying Sequence
Recognizing Cause and Effect
Comparing and Contrasting
Making Inferences
Understanding Literary Elements
Analyzing Language
Recognizing Author's Purpose
Each book features:
Part I (beginning of the book): Skill Review
Students review various approaches to address the skill. For each approach, an instructional overview is followed by a unique guided practice section that gives the answer along with an explanation of why the choice is correct. This practice promotes a deeper understanding of each approach and prepares students for Part II of the book.
Part II (back of the book): Independent Practice
Early on, reminders direct readers back to specific pages in Part I for support. As practice progresses, the reminders are phased out to encourage students to work on their own.
Other book features:
Graphic organizers, such as webs, time lines, Venn diagrams, cause-and-effect charts, and process diagrams, help students comprehend text.
Multiple-choice and open-ended written response questions are found throughout Part I and Part II of each book.
